One of the perks of living in Jakarta: custom-made clothes! Jakarta has excellent tailors. But how do you find the good ones, reliable and recommended? Many of the best, with decades of experience, are hidden in narrow side street, without big ads.

Here are 4 excellent tailors to get you started. One of the best tailors for men's clothing, and three more tailors specialized in women's clothing. Whether you are looking for Batik or modern clothes, these tailors can do the job!

Riza Tailor: for men's clothing

When it comes to a tailor for men suits and shirts, there is only one person in town that you should know: Pak Rizal. He and his wife have a tailor shop in Kemang that has become an institution in Jakarta. The shop has a selection of textiles, but you can also bring your own. Be prepared for excellent craftmanship, tailored clothes that will fit you like a glove. While Riza’s tailoring work is impeccable, do not try to negotiate prices. They are firm. Still a lot less than Laxmi and other larger chains.

They do not design women clothes, but if you bring an example, they can certainly copy it.

Ibu Rofi

With the biggest smile, Ibu Rofi has been making all types of women garments for more than 15 years. She works in her small home atelier hidden in a narrow side alley in Kemang. Don’t be scared off by the outside looks of the shop or name ‘Modeste’; Ibu Rofi can design high-end dresses and doesn’t mind sexy elements at all. I shared one example photo of an evening gown, with a very revealing open back, and she took on the challenge 100%.

Depending on your Bahasa Indonesia, I encourage you to use Google Translate. Her use of English is basic, her sewing skills are outstanding.

Pupun Dressmaker

Hidden in a small side street in West Pejatan you can find Ibu Pupun’s workshop where she and her staff have been making clothes since 1998. Ibu Pupun can make all kinds of customized clothes, mostly for women but she can also tailor for men. Bring an example and she can quickly copy that. She communicates well in English, and doesn’t mind doing multiple fittings and alterations. Ibu Pupun can even do pillows and upholstery items.

Appointment by WA is recommended. And if you go, you can also pick-up some homemade pizza from their side business, @kitaspizza.id.

Ibu Yanny [Label: Lesung Pipit]

Ibu Yanny studied and worked in fashion in Paris, with almost 30 years of experience. She knows how to custom design exclusive cocktail and evenings gowns, but can also do alterations. Having photos of example dresses certainly helps, so she can help you create anything that you wish for.

Her prices for a custom dress are higher than other tailors (starting at 2.5 juta), but the quality is unpaired. Ibu Yanny will make sure that your dress looks stellar, so you can walk into a party with a unique outfit.

She works from her home atelier by appointment only.
